Early Life and Education

Ingemar Unge was born in Sweden on December 19, 1927. He studied engineering at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, graduating in 1950.

Career

After graduating, Unge worked as an engineer for several companies. In 1965, he founded his own company, Intertechnique AB, which specialized in developing and manufacturing medical and industrial equipment.

Unge was a prolific inventor, holding over 100 patents. His inventions include the first portable defibrillator, the first artificial heart valve, and the first implantable pacemaker.

Awards and Recognition

Unge received numerous awards for his work, including the IEEE Engineering Medal of Honor in 1987 and the National Medal of Technology in 1999.

Personal Life

Unge married Gunvor Unge in 1953. They had three children. Unge was a keen sportsman, enjoying sailing and skiing. He died in Stockholm on March 20, 2008.
