Riccardo Muti: A Life in Music

Early Life and Career

Riccardo Muti was born on July 28, 1941, in Naples, Italy. He began his musical studies at a young age and made his conducting debut at the age of 19. In 1968, he was appointed principal conductor and music director of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, a position he held until 1980. During his tenure, he led the orchestra to international acclaim and established a reputation as one of the world's leading conductors.

International Success

In the years that followed, Muti went on to direct many of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Philharmonia Orchestra. He also served as music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1980 to 1992 and the New York Philharmonic from 2009 to 2017. Under his leadership, these orchestras reached new heights of musical excellence and performed to sold-out audiences around the world.
