Aidslifecycle Fundraiser Is Ending After More Than 30 Years

AIDS/LifeCycle fundraiser ends after more than 30 years

AIDS/LifeCycle, one of the nation’s oldest and most successful fundraising rides to fight HIV and AIDS, is ending after more than 30 years.

The San Francisco AIDS Foundation (SFAF), which has organized the seven-day, 545-mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles since 1993, announced the decision on Wednesday.

The decision to end the event was made after a "careful and thorough review" of the ride's "changing landscape," SFAF officials said. The ride's fundraising totals have declined in recent years, from a peak of $16.3 million in 2013 to $8.6 million in 2022.

The event has raised more than $300 million since its inception, and has been a major source of funding for SFAF's HIV prevention and care programs. SFAF officials said they are committed to continuing to fight HIV and AIDS, and will explore new ways to engage supporters and raise funds.

"AIDS/LifeCycle has been an incredible journey, and we are so grateful to everyone who has been a part of it," SFAF CEO Tyler TerMeer said in a statement. "We are proud of the impact we have made, and we are committed to continuing to fight HIV and AIDS in new and innovative ways."

The final AIDS/LifeCycle ride will take place from May 28 to June 4, 2023.
