Barnsdall, Oklahoma: A Historical Town with a Rich Past
The Town's History
Barnsdall, Oklahoma, is a small town located in the northern part of the state. The town was founded in 1904 by Theodore N. Barnsdall, a pioneer in the oil industry. Barnsdall was initially known as Lenapah, but the name was changed to honor its founder in 1907. The town quickly grew into a major oil-producing center, and by the 1920s, it was home to several large refineries.
The Wax Plant
One of the most important industries in Barnsdall's history was the wax plant. The plant was built in 1911 and quickly became the world's largest manufacturer of microcrystalline waxes. The plant remained operational into the 1980s, and its closure had a significant impact on the town's economy.
The Cemetery
The Barnsdall City Cemetery is a historic cemetery located on the east side of town. The cemetery was established in 1904, and it contains the graves of many of the town's early settlers. The cemetery is also home to a number of historic monuments, including a memorial to the victims of the 1906 Barnsdall massacre.
